Saint Teresa is known as virgo seraphica, or the "seraphic virgin," meaning angelic. She's also referred to as doctrix mystica, or doctor of mystical theology.
Born in Avila in 1515, she ran away from home at seven in hope of being martyred by the Moors so she could "come to see God." When she turned 18, she joined the Carmelite Order and converted many through her devotion and care.
She reached the highest degree of prayer and gained multitudes of divine knowledge, and Pope Paul VI named her the first woman Doctor of the Church in 1970. She reached a climax when her heart became transfixed, known as transverberatio cordis. This event is now memorialized by the Catholic Church annually on August 27.
